How Do I ... subdivide my site into sections?

Overview

Some websites are more than just 3 or 4 pages big. Indeed the term web-site suggests a site of pages organised into a logical structure. Take any existing web portals for example, they will most likely be sub-divided into logical entities or categories such as sport, news, email etc. Clear-Site caters for this concept also. This feature will be of most benefit to sports clubs, communities and portals but can also be used for business sites.

To set up a sub-site within your site you will need to usderstand what a 'Base Site' is. Think of a Base as a folder within your site (the same as a folder in Windows Explorer). A folder can contain files and other folders. In Clear-Site a Base can contain pages (content pages, messageboards, guestbooks, polls) abd other Base sites. Clear-Site allows for up to 3 levels of categorisation (i.e. your hierarchy can only go 3 deep). That means that we can have sub-categories withom sub-categories. This is best explained with an example.

Lets say that Faketown Community is looking to set up their new cpmmunity portal website. From consulting with the people in the cummunity they have come up with the following list of pages that they would like to add to the site.

Church Notices, Mass Times, Church Contact Details, GAA page, GAA club news, Business page, Business directory, Primary School Page, Secondary School Page, Further Education courses, Attractions, History, Village Notes, Message Board, Poll, Tidy Towns, Gallery, Accomadation & Guestbook.

The eventually decide that the structure that they want for the site will be something like this.

Church

  Church Notices
  Mass Times
  Contact

GAA
  Club News

Business
  Directory

Education
  Primary School
  Secondary School
  Further Education
    Courses

Attractions
History
Village Notes
Messageboard
Poll
Tidy Towns
Gallery
Accomadation
Guestbook

This Layout should make for easier navigation through the public site. We can see here that in the plan, Church, GAA, Business & Education are all subdivided into smaller sections. We will need to use a Base Site to achieve this. We can see that Education has 2 pages (Primary School & Secondary School) and another category (Further Education) which contains a courses list. Lets go about creating the Education section in Clear-Site.

First of all we need to click on the 'Add New' option in the 'Content' menu. This will open the add new screen. Select Base from here and fill out the base details as described here using 'Education' as your base name. Click on the 'Add Base Node' button and you will again be presented with the add new screen. This time Select Content and you will be presented with the add content list screen. Type in 'Primary School' for the content name and click on 'Add Content List'. You will now be redirected back to your site explorer where you will see the layout of the node take place. It should now look something like this

Education
  Primary School

The Primary School Content list is empty at the moment, we can come back and sort that out later but for now click on 'Education'. This will open up the 'Edit Base' screen. Click on the 'Add New' button at the top of the screen. This will open up the add new screen yet again. Once more select Content and this time use 'Secondary school' as the Content Name. Add up the content list and now your explorer should look somewthing like this.

Education
  Primary School
  Secondary School

Once again click on 'Education' and 'Add New'. Select Base this time. Enter 'Further Education' as the base name and add up the new base node. This will again open up the 'Add New' screen. Select Content again and give the content the name 'Courses'. Now your explorer should look like this.
Education
  Primary School
  Secondary School
  Further Education
    Courses

And thats how we can use the Base Type to sub divide our sites. When somebody accesses the homepage in the public section they will only see one link - Education. Clicking on this will bring them to the Education section where they will have 3 options, Primary School, Secondary School & Further Education. Clicking on the latter will bring them a further level into the hierarchy and they will be able to view the courses.

The advantages of sub-dividing your site into different categories are:-

1) Clarity - The user may navigate their way through the site in a logical fashion without beimng bombarded with too much information
2) Ownership - We can add up a user to the system and give them ownership to the parent node (in this case - 'Education'). The new user now has access to all child nodes and the admin user doesn't need to worry about monitoring these.
